Shawl Crochet Patterns & Knitting Patterns

Call it a shawl, a wrap, or a scarf, but call them fun because there are so many styles! Today I’m sharing the collection of your favorite, free crochet shawl patterns and knitting patterns from the blog.

Wraps and shawls are such a quintessential knit and crochet project. I’m also giving you some ideas and tips for picking a shawl pattern that will work for you!

The patterns I’ve chosen here have been your faves on the blog over the last few years. Some are beginner friendly, while others will stretch your skills. There is truly something for everyone, AND something for every climate at this point!

If you are thinking of making a wrap, the styles are endless. There are all shapes and sizes out there including bias wraps, triangle wraps, rectangular wraps and more. I tend to like rectangle wraps as they often don’t have any shaping or extra counting.

Here are some tips and frequently asked questions as you think about making a shawl!

What is the Best Yarn For Knit and Crochet Shawls?

The best yarns to use include fibers that feel soft on the skin and that work for the pattern. Depending on the pattern that you choose, it might call for a worsted weight #4 yarn, or a chunky yarn, and so on. You want to be sure to pick a yarn that is the same weight as the yarn required for the pattern.

To make a summer shawl, or light shawl, you would want to use a #4 weight or lighter. With shawls that you knit or crochet for winter, there is a bit more flexibility. I also personally like to make sure that I use a washable yarn for my shawls.

Another fun thing to do is to use a color changing yarn like Lion Brand Mandala HERE. It’s an easy way to add color to your shawl without making it complicated! You’ll find several patterns below that use various color changing yarns.

Beginner Shawl Making Suggestions

If you’re looking for a beginner friendly pattern, shawls are a great project to consider! You will want to choose a shawl with a basic shape, like a rectangle. You will also want to choose a shawl that uses simple stitches. There are a couple great, total beginner options listed below, like this Sedona Shawl Pattern is a perfect beginner knit shawl, or the Juno Wrap Pattern is a perfect first crochet shawl. You can also find an endless supply of shawl patterns on Ravelry too! It let’s you search based on skill level, yarn used, and more!

Many people enjoy making prayer shawls or wraps for charity. These are often donated to churches or friends and family members. They can have a deep meaning and are truly treasured by the recipient.

Lastly, many of my wraps double as scarves! I use them as almost a “wearable blanket”. They are cozy and easy to wear with so many outfits. Hope you enjoy these free shawl patterns!

  2. For the summer tide wrap you used Low Tide yarn from Lion Brand. It has since been discontinued, do you have a suggestion for a similar constructed yarn? I love working with chainette constructed yarns, they don’t split! Lol. Thank you so much for sharing your fantastic talent with us. As always, beautiful patterns that make me wish I had more time to make all the pretties you design.

    1. Have you tried yarnsub.com? You put the name of the yarn you’re looking to match in the search bar, it will ask you to confirm the name and it will search thousands of yarns for matches that come pretty close in terms of fiber, weight, material, etc. Hope you find one! 🙂

    2. Ugh! I don’t know of any other comparable chainettes, unfortunately! You could use another yarn with a comparable weight, and it certainly doesn’t have to be chainette. But I enjoy them too!
