Magnolia Granny Square Bag Crochet Pattern

This granny square bag pattern continues to be a blog favorite, so I wanted to update it a bit! It’s super easy and fun to make. Just grab that stash of yarn to get started!

Okay, here we’ve got a happy, pretty, vintage style granny square bag to carry all our things. You will simply crochet 24 basic granny squares and put them together to make this super fun tote bag. The color options are endless, and the granny square trend isn’t going anywhere!

You can see the full, free pattern below, or grab the ad-free, printable PDF version from my Etsy Shop HERE, or the kit in many color options from Lion Brand Yarn HERE.

I’m so excited to have this happy, cotton bag for spring and summer! It’s a generous size that makes it pretty versatile. The colorful centers remind me of cheerful flowers, hence the name “Magnolia”!

This gorgeous bag is useful in so many ways! Because it’s a great, washable cotton, it can be used as a market tote, a large purse, or even a grocery bag! With plastic bags being used less and less, this is a great option to add to your re-usable bags. It’s easy to roll up and take on that summer vacation as well.

While I made mine with cotton, you certainly can crochet this bag with any yarn that you like. You simply need to make sure it’s either a light #3 yarn or a worsted weight #4 yarn. Plenty of folks have crocheted it with acrylic yarn!

Granny squares have taken over, and I’ve also jumped on the bandwagon. So far there’s there’s been the Granny Square Hot Pad, the Granny Square Vest, The Arlo Cardigan, and more recently the Nora Granny Square Blanket! Sooooo, yeah, I’m into granny squares. And this bag, right? I’m loving it!!

I considered doing a more elaborate type of granny square for this bag, but ultimately wanted to keep it simple and classic.

If you’ve never crocheted a granny square, this is the bag to start. It’s the most basic square that there is, but it looks fancy when it’s turned on it’s side, as they are with this bag. They almost look like diamonds rather than squares, right?

There are so many ways to make a bag with granny squares! I made a hot pad a while back and included a picture tutorial. It is made with the same type of square to get started, so check out that granny square pattern and picture tutorial HERE!

I was laying the squares out every which way, thinking about what size would be best as well as what might be cute. This style of bag turned out to just have a really nice shape and is able to fit a lot of “stuff”. I can imagine shoving as many towels as I can in it and heading to the pool this summer.

These colors were cool to work with because I feel like they work for summer as well as fall, but you can use any combo that you’d like!

Initially, I had ordered a bright pink instead of the grey, but the grey made the color palette feel more versatile for the seasons. Pink and any other bright color combo would be stunning for spring and summer months. Be creative when you choose your colors!

I’m also super happy with the Lion Brand Yarn 24/7 Cotton. It’s mercerized, so it has a sheen to it and feels super durable. It also feels like it won’t get as dirty as some of the kitchen cottons that I’ve worked with in the past. It’s such a great option for this bag, or really any totes or home goods that you might be working on.

Okay, should we hop to the pattern?

Remember that you can see the full free pattern below, or you can purchase the ad-free, printable version from my Etsy Shop HERE!

Weave in all those ends! Next, move onto Assembly.

With your white yarn and a tapestry needle, whip stitch seam squares together as pictured
below. There’s no particular order that they squares must be in, simply seam them together
as pictured.

Once you’ve seamed the pretty squares together to make the main portion of the bag, you
can move onto the handles!

Attach yarn to outer edge, corner of bag opening.

Single crochet to top of bag, make a chain as long as you’d like your handle (approximately
61 ch sts) and attach to the top of the next square. Next, single crochet around to other
side, and repeat on opposite side of bag.

Work 2 – 3 rounds of single crochet, working around the bag, and into the chain stitches
that will become the handles (there are a total of two handles, one on each side). Feel
free to crochet for more rounds if you’d like wider handles.

Tie off and weave in ends. Yay, you’ve got a beautiful bag!

There is one handle on each side. You can make them as long or short as you’d like.

Optional tassels:
With your left-over yarn, you may choose to add tassels to add a playful, trendy touch to your bag. You can find a tutorial on how to make tassels from the Mama In A Stitch Blog here: https://www.mamainastitch.com/how-to-make-tassels

I hope you enjoy this happy bag as much as I do! It’s a new fave.
