St. Moritz Blanket Crochet Pattern

This beautiful baby blanket (or lap blanket) is both timeless and luxurious. The color is rustic lux, but you can make it in any color that you like! It’s a lot of fun to crochet as the stitches work up in an easy repeat, yet it’s got a unique look because it’s worked from corner to corner.

Check out the full free pattern below, or you may choose to purchase the ad-free, printable pattern from Etsy HERE or the kit from Lion Brand HERE.

As of this month, it’s been 11 years since I started this blog, yet it’s still so fun to play with stitches and yarns as there is endless creativity in crochet! I thought this stitch and yarn combo was perfect for a baby blanket, or a classic blanket for your lap. I hope you enjoy it. 🙂

It’s very easy to make it as large or small as you’d like. Just keep yarn needs in mind as you adjust the pattern.

The pattern uses the Lemon Peel Stitch, which you may remember from my Chunky Icelandic Blanket HERE, but it’s worked corner to corner so that the texture actually looks different than when it’s worked in regular rows. The first couple of rows are where you have to pay attention, but then the repeat is so simple and meditative. This is a great pattern if you’re wanting to stretch your skills just a bit! It’s simple, but the corner-to-corner aspect makes it different.

I will have a video tutorial available soon, so check back because I will link to it here!

(Also, if you love this non-holey style of crochet stitch, also check out my Blanket Stitch Tutorial HERE which is another awesome stitch for baby blankets)

Above: This is just a few rows into the blanket. See how I started at the corner where the tail is? And now the blanket will get larger until I begin to decrease. It’s easy once you practice!
Above: Here is a little sample practice swatch that shows how the blanket turns into a square. Check back for the YouTube tutorial that I will share soon!

Okay, let’s hop to this pattern!

Remember that you may choose to purchase the ad-free, printable version from Etsy HERE or check out the full, free pattern below.

Description:  With it’s quiet luxury, this soft, timeless blanket uses an understated textured stitch and a lovely yarn. Named after St. Moritz, a posh alpine town in Switzerland, this blanket is as cozy as it is refined. Sized as a lapghan or baby blanket, it’s perfect for littles to cuddle, or to lay on your lap by the fire.  A repetitive pattern is worked corner to corner to make a play on a classic, timeless stitch.  If you’re looking to stretch your crochet skills, while making a special blanket, this could be your next project. Choose from the many beautiful color options!

Pattern Notes:

This blanket pattern uses the Lemon Peel Stitch and it is crocheted from corner to corner to create an eye catching pattern.  Consider practicing this stitch pattern on a small swatch before beginning the entire blanket.  The decrease section in particular can take a few practice runs, but it’s easy once you get it! Feel free to count rows if needed to ensure you have the same number of rows of increases as decreases so the blanket comes out square.  Definitely start off using a stitch marker in the decrease section as needed to keep you on track at first.

Block to shape and size if desired. Enjoy!

Customizing the size:

You can make this as large or small as you want by simply continuing to crochet the increase section until the desired width/length and then beginning your decrease.  Keep yarn needs in mind if you make it larger!

Abbreviations (US) & Skills:

ch – chain

st – stitch

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

Dc2tog – double crochet two together

PM – place a marker

*repeat

I recommend placing a stitch marker when you make the ch 3 or ch 2 at the beginning of each row so you can find the ch spaces at the end of the rows.  This is particularly important for the decrease section when working the ch 2 at the beginning of the row.

St. Moritz Lemon Peel Crochet Blanket Pattern

Ch 4

Row 1 [1 sc, 1 dc] in 4th ch from hook, turn. (1sc, 1 dc, 1 ch-3 sp)

Row 2 Ch 3, PM, 1 sc in 1st dc, 1 dc in next sc, [1 sc, 1dc] in ch-3 sp, turn. (2sc, 2dc, 1 ch-3 sp) turn.

Row 3 Ch 3, PM, 1 sc in 1st dc, 1 dc in next sc. 1 sc in next dc, 1 dc in next sc, [1 sc, 1 dc] in ch-3 sp, turn. (3 sc, 3 dc, 1 ch-3 sp)

Row 4 Ch 3, PM, 1 sc in 1st dc, 1 dc in next sc. *1 sc in next dc, 1 dc in next sc; repeat from * to ch-3 sp [1 sc, 1 dc] in ch-3 sp, turn. (4sc, 4 dc, 1 ch-3 sp)

Repeat row 4 until pattern measures approximately 38” along outer edge, stretching from beginning chain 4 to the end of the edge. This is not the length of the row, but of the outer edge of the “triangle” you’ve just crocheted.  Then move onto the “Decrease Section”.

Decrease Section

Row 5 Ch 2, PM, skip 1st dc and sc, 1 sc in next dc* 1 dc in next sc, 1 sc in next dc; repeat from * to last sc before ch-3 sp from previous row, dc2tog in last sc and ch-3 sp, turn.

Row 6 Ch 2, PM, sk 1st dc and sc, 1 sc in next dc *1dc in next sc, 1 sc in next dc; repeat from – to last sc before ch-2 sp, dc2tog in last sc & ch-2 sp, turn.

Work row 6 until you have a total of 4 sts + 2 ch in your row (1 sc, 1 dc, 1 sc, 1 dc2tog)

Row 7 Ch 2, PM, skip 1st dc and sc, 1 sc in next dc, dc2tog in last sc & ch 2, turn.

Row 8 Ch 1, sk 1st dc and sc, 1 sc in ch-2 sp. Tie off and weave in ends. Move onto optional border.

Delicate Bobbles Optional Border:

(And please feel free to make this with any border you like!)

Special stitch:

Dc5tog – dc 5 stitches together

Yarn over, insert hook, yo, pull through, yo, pull through two loops, *yo, insert hook

into same sp as before, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 loops. Repeat from * 3 more

times, yo and pull through all 6 loops.

First, single crochet evenly around the entire blanket working 3 sc into each corner.

The decorative Delicate Bobbles border is then worked on two opposite edges of the blanket.

You may also choose to work the pattern all the way around. Keep yarn needs in mind if you

adjust the border or blanket.

Row 1 *Ch 3, work Dc5tog, slip st into the next 3 sts and repeat from * across.

Tie off and weave in ends. Repeat on two opposite ends of the blanket.

So beautiful!

I really like how it’s not “holey”. Just a lovely little texture.

Hope you liked this one my friends, and happy crocheting!

XO Jessica
