It’s been a minute since I made a crochet basket, so it was cool to do something different. I’ve made little baskets, but never a larger type basket. When making this one, I wanted it to be able to hold it’s shape, but I also didn’t want to kill my hands while making it.
This basket does hold it’s shape BUT can also double as a heavy duty basket-type bag. If you’ve ever crocheted a super stiff basket or a rug, you know what I mean by “hand killer”. I didn’t want a hand killer where it was tough to make the stitches. This one is fairly easy on the hands to crochet, I must say! However, if you WANT a stiffer basket, all you have to do is go down hook sizes. The basket will be smaller unless you adjust, but the fabric will be stiffer. Just FYI!
What Yarn Do You Use To Crochet A Chunky Basket?
When you crochet a chunky basket, you’ll want to use either chunky yarn or super bulky #6 yarn. For the basket here today, you’ll use super bulky #6 yarn, Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick Yarn.
You can use just about any fiber, as long as you use a small hook as well! You need to use a much smaller hook than the yarn calls for in order for a basket to hold it’s shape.
How To Crochet This Chunky Basket
As I mentioned, the detailed step by step pattern is below, but here’s how you put this together in human terms!
First, you’ll crochet a round base. From there, you want to crochet the sides in continuous rounds. Here are a couple of pictures of what it looks like as it comes together!
Okay, let’s get to this rustic little (or big) basket!

Pattern Notes:
This basket is crocheted by creating a flat base, and then working the sides in continuous
rounds. Feel free to customize it as you’d like, changing colors to make more stripes, or by
adjusting the size.
The basket pattern as written makes a basket that is firm enough to sit on the ground,
however, it is not as stiff as some baskets. This was intended for ease of making as stiff
baskets can be hard on the hands to crochet. If you like a stiffer basket, simply use a smaller crochet hook. You might test some sample swatches before beginning to ensure you like the fabric. Keep in mind that your basket will be smaller when you go down hook sizes without making any other pattern adjustments.
Size Adjustments: To make the basket deeper and taller, simply crochet more rounds on
the sides until it reaches your desired height. The width can be make larger by creating
more rounds on the base, but you would need to be experienced in how to do this with the
stitch counts needed for each round! Have fun!
