Rocky Mountain Sampler Blanket Knitting Pattern

Today’s blanket pattern is really special and a pinnacle of knit texture, color, and coziness to end the year! It’s easy to knit, and it can be customized in so many ways. Even a beginner can use this pattern, and the fun of it is that you can make it your own. Read on!

You can see the full, free knitting pattern below, or you may choose to purchase the ad-free printable version from Etsy HERE, or the kit (in many color options) from Lion Brand HERE.

The colors and stitching were inspired by the Rocky Mountains – the beauty, rugged mountains, valleys and prairie lands. Definitely my most colorful blanket pattern yet, it uses EIGHT different colors, but you don’t HAVE to use eight colors!

Make it a solid color, alternate just two colors, or use a variegated yarn. I think it will make a great stash buster for those extra skeins of yarn that you have on hand. 🙂

Each of the last couple of years I’ve tried to create one knit blanket that’s got a lot of interest and is a tad more special than the rest. This is THAT blanket. 🙂

By the way, if you’re a crocheter who sees this and wants to make it, you can certainly learn to knit! Check out my post and video here where I show you the method I find the easiest.

You might remember the Winter Cuddler or the Fall Cuddler. Each of those are also great textured options, and they use super bulky yarn. Today’s Rocky Mountain Sampler uses Lion Brand Hue + Me chunky #5 yarn, so technically, you could also hold two strands of worsted weight yarn together to equal that thickness.

That brings me to one of the questions I get most often – how can I use this pattern with worsted weight yarn? The easiest would be to do what I just mentioned, hold two strands together and follow the pattern as written. Otherwise, you will have a smaller blanket if you adjust needle size and yarn size down from what’s listed. 🙂 If you are experienced, I’ve listed how to adjust the size with the stitch multiples in the Notes section of the pattern.

Again, while I used, eight colors, you can use any color combo you like. This would be beautiful in one solid color as well! If you have two colors you like together, just alternate those two colors throughout. The options are endless, and there are so many ways to make this beautiful.

How do we knit this sampler? It’s simple! Each section, or color, has it’s own easy little stitch pattern. From Raised Eyelets, to Garter Diagonals, to Irish Moss Stitch, you won’t get bored! You’ll find there is a textured section followed by a stockinette section. Each of these patterns use basic knit and purl stitches.

Are you a complete beginner who still isn’t quite ready to tackle anything but garter and stockinette? No prob! You can just sub any of the textured sections with garter stitch (knit stitch only). Simply alternate the stockinette sections with garter sections, and you can still enjoy this blanket!

For those who want simple stitching, but don’t want to get bored, this blanket is perfect. It’s challenging enough to make you feel accomplished and it gives you just enough color and pattern to keep you interested. I love samplers for this reason. Yay!

Let’s hope to it!

Remember that you can see the free pattern below, or purchase the convenient ad-free printable on Etsy HERE. I do recommend purchasing the printable version on this one as it is long and more detailed than many of my patterns. But do what works for you!

Pattern Notes:
This blanket is knit from the bottom up. There are 8 different sections that each use a specific color and stitch pattern. You’ll work through each skein of yarn for each section, with each section being approximately 6”. This will leave you a small amount of yarn left over of each color. Feel free to make this your own by using any color combo you’d like! If any of the stitch sections are too challenging, you can certainly sub it with a different stitch. The most advanced stitch pattern section is the Garter Diagonals. If it seems too tough, feel free to use the seed stitch (you can find videos and tutorials online for this stitch). Most of the stitches used in this pattern are easy, and you can find additional help by conducting an online search for any of the stitch patterns. Keep in mind you will always knit the first and last 8 stitches of every row in order to make the pretty border. Have fun! Each section begins on the Right Side of the blanket. The knit side of the stockinette stitch is the Right Side. This may help you if you find yourself not knowing the right or wrong sides.

Adjusting Size: If you’d like to make your blanket wider or narrower, you may do so by casting on more or fewer stitches in a multiple of 8. To make it longer, simply repeat any of the sections until your desired look and length is achieved. Keep yarn needs in mind!

  1. Such a gorgeous throw. The textures and colors are fantastic. Wish I was up in the Rockies in front of a fireplace trying to make this.
