Free Easy Hand Knit Pet Bed

Beginner Hand Knit Dog Bed

This pretty bed can be hand knit for a dog or cat, and it’s so fast and easy! There’s also no need to stuff it as the large “yarn” is already squishy and soft. It is perfect for beginners because you don’t even need any knitting needles.

I’m linking to a video below on exactly how you can knit this bed, and I’m also going to share a picture tutorial on how to make that raised edging. Scroll down to check it out! I’ve got the free pattern here on the blog, or you can also grab the kit HERE.

You can easily make this any size. Koda took zero convincing to curl up on this bed immediately. Ha!

You’ll see that you can easily adjust it to make it any size that you’d like.

I used 4 skeins of Lion Brand Cover Story for my standard poodle who is 70lbs and all legs. He can’t completely stretch out on it, but he loves it and it definitely works for him!

Pattern Description: Whether you’ve never knit, or you knit every day, you can make this squishy, luxurious looking pet bed for your best friend! Using just your hands or a pair of knitting needles, this pretty bed works up very quickly. It’s easy to modify the pattern to make it any dimensions you’d like. Have fun!

Notes: This blanket can be knit without needles (recommended).  It can also be knit on US 100 size 38 mm circular knitting needles.  It is made using the stockinette stitch, so if you’re knitting it with needles, you will work a row of knit followed by a row of purl stitches.

Knitting Instructions Without Needles

Go straight to the video tutorial on YouTube through the link below to see the method on how to hand knit this blanket. Note that this pet bed pattern calls to chain/cast on 14 stitches, otherwise the method is the same in the video! Work until your blanket is approximately 28”  – 30” long and you’ve got one skein left to make your raised edge. Change skeins at the end of a row and make a knot if needed to secure.  Cast off before moving onto the Raised Edge Instructions on page 4.

Cast on 14 stitches

Cast on more or fewer stitches in order to make it wider or shorter as preferred. The fun of this project is that you can make it any dimensions that you like!

Change skeins at the end of the row. You may tie a knot to secure, and then weave in ends.

Row 1 Knit across the row

Row 2 Purl across the row

Repeat rows 1 & 2, in that order until your bed is approximately 28” and you have one skein left to make the Raised Edge (optional) around the bed.

Cast off and weave in ends.

Next, you may choose to add the raised edging by following the picture tutorial.
