Equinox Striped Blanket Pattern
Today’s free pattern is for a simple, modern blanket made with a basic but beautiful stitch! The stripes fade together for a soothing look, and you can use any colors that you like. It uses half double crochet stitches which are worked in the spaces rather than the stitches, and this gives the fabric a unique appeal. (I used this stitch in the pattern from my Vail Topper as well!)

I named this the Equinox Blanket as each of the major striping patterns represent half of the blanket, much like the day of equinox is equally split. I also love the contrast of the fading “Canyon Sunset” color and the “Grey Heather” as the Grey Heather reminds me of night, and the Canyon Sunset of day break. They also both happen to be really trendy colors right now. 🙂
Basically, if you can do a half double crochet stitch, you can make this blanket. There are color changes, but in much of the pattern you can carry the yarn up the sides so that you can avoid weaving in the ends. See where there are two rows worked at a time? Go ahead and carry the yarn up the sides at those sections. You likely want to cut the yarn when doing single color rows or the large stripes.
While I used Lion Brand Wool Ease worsted weight yarn, you can use any worsted weight yarn that you like. I just love the Wool Ease colors (HERE). I can imagine some really terrific color combos with this blanket!
It’s been a long several months as we’ve now been at this homeschool thing for a year and a half now (WOW). While there have been many wonderful things that have come of it, there’s also been some challenges, especially when it comes to balancing work, blogging and school.
This blanket was so relaxing and meditative for me. It was a work in progress and I designed the striping as I crocheted along. So often I’m planning ahead, doing all kinds math, figuring, sketching and more before I start a new pattern. This one just flowed and it was a truly welcome break. I hope you’ll find it to be simple and meditative as well.
The size as written makes a lovely lap blanket (small throw) or even a baby/toddler blanket. However, it’s easy to adjust the size (see the Notes section). Hope you enjoy it!
So, let’s get to it. 🙂

I love all your blankets and have been working on several styles. You mentioned blocking them. How do you block them? I am used to blocking small projects but have never blocked anything this large.
Thankyou

Beautiful blanket, I wish I could crochet.
Will you be Adding a knitted version in the future?
I made your knitted shawl that you posted a short while ago. I will try and attach a picture of it. Two skeins and all knit! ❤️
This is gorgeous. I keep trying to get the Kit for the Cabin Stripes blanket but they are always out of stock on some of the colours. So difficult to get some yarns right now.
I love all your patterns. You are so gifted and talented.
Thank you
I love the look of this! Can’t wait to try
I can’t wait to make the Equinox blanket, the colors are refreshing..it HAS been such a busy time for everyone, hang in there and keep posting your beautiful creations when you can! Love following!
✌❤
Very pretty, Wool Ease makes terrific blankets. I like the color palette too.
I absolutely love your blog, and I love all the wearables & giftables you crank out (like a machine). Right now I only know how to knit, and lately everything that I’ve ooooo’ed and ahhhhhh’ed on your blog is crocheted. AHHHHH! I need to learn to crochet FAST. Everything you do is so lovely, perfect on the budget, not crazy complicated and just looks gorgeous. Wish I was quicker so I could do more.
I know I’m going to sound not so smart, but I downloaded your Equinox blanket pattern and cannot figure out where the hdc stitches go to the second row. I had to go up to a 7mm hook size to get the gauge. I’m having a terrible time considering this pattern is for beginners. Is there a picture I could look at to see where to put the hook? I’m not really seeing a space big enough for my hook.
