Comfy Colors Cardigan Knitting Pattern

I can’t believe we’re soon heading into fall, pumpkin spice season, and sweater weather! I’m making my fall knits debut with the sweater you’re going to want to LIVE in, the “Comfy Colors Cardigan”!

Indeed it turned out so comfy, and is also really easy to knit! I love the various colors (and you could make it in a solid color as well). If you know the basic knit stitches, and can do the seed stitch, you’re ready to make this squishy sweater. Scroll down to see the full free pattern, or you may choose to purchase the ad-free printable from my Etsy shop HERE, or the kit from Lion Brand Yarn HERE. Hello Fall!

Pick any 3 colors you like and go! But I’m loving these for the pumpkin spice time of year.

So when I designed this, I was thinking about how to use some color without doing a ton of color changes (and weaving in ends). There have been some really trendy color block sweaters out in the stores this year, so I leaned into doing something along those lines.

I also threw in some texture for interest, and am really pleased with how it turned out! It truly is one of the comfiest sweaters from the blog thus far. If you’ve made My Comfiest Knit Cardigan, it has a similar feel. This Comfy Colors Cardigan is little easier in my opinion because you don’t have to pick up any stitches to make the neckline or collar. Just knit the panels and put ’em together!

If you follow me, you know how most of my sweaters are constructed. In easy ways that we all can do. Ha! (But stay tuned, because I’m working on a sweater now that’s going to be TOTALLY different)

The texture with this yarn is super squishy. It is a sweater you’ll want to live in.

I call it beginner friendly because the sweater is made out of rectangular panels that are then seamed together at the end. There is very light shaping on the sleeves, but they too are knit flat. You just need to do basic decreasing (look on YouTube if you’ve never tried it). Super simple!

This one is super easy to customize too. Don’t like the seed stitch? Just do it all in garter. Want to make it a solid color? Go for it! I can’t wait to see how you make it your own!

With a generous length on the sleeves, you’ll feel extra cuddly. And again – TEXTURE.

Let’s talk yarn. It’s worsted weight! 🙂 It will take a little longer than some of my other sweaters made with the big, chunky yarns, but it’s so worth it! (And if you like the chunkies, do check out my Big Comfy Ribbed Cardigan) The Lion Brand Heartland yarn has long been a favorite of mine, and I really like the color options. It’s SO soft as well, and just nice to work with. I was happy to use it again for this project as it had been a while!

Okay, shall we get to this fall worthy, easy peasy knitting pattern?

one “ridge” of garter is 2 rows!)

Notes:
You will knit a rectangular back panel, two rectangular front panels, and two lightly
shaped sleeves. Each front and back panel is knit from the bottom up and all pieces of
the cardigan are knit flat. Circular needles are called for in this pattern only because it
may be difficult to fit all of the stitches on straight needles. The panels are each sewn
and seamed together to finish, including the sleeves. If you’re experienced and would
like to knit the sleeves in the round to avoid sewing and seaming, you may do so. This is
a very forgiving pattern, and you can adjust the sizing to make it your own! Feel free to
knit for more or fewer rows to make it longer or shorter (keep yarn needs in mind).

  1. Jessica,

I am looking at these pictures for this new cardigan and I feel compelled to reach out and ask you, how are things going for you? Pardon me, for my intrusive questions, but as I said, these pictures have me compelled to reach out. I’ve been following your blog, for close to decade and your baby girl was just a toddler! What grade will she be entering in the fall? How have you and your family, been impacted by the virus? My Father had the virus before it was classified by the WHO, it was really scary!

But back to you! How is your health?! I wish, all of you, good health and happiness and joyful start, to the new school year.

    Blessed be,
    Cassandra
