Trapper Blanket Crochet Pattern

Today’s blanket is super easy and features a beautiful self striping pattern with Scarfie yarn! It’s a throw back to the old days when mountain men had to stay warm in the mountain winters with practical, woolly blankets. Camp blankets are so classic, yet trendy right now!

This is a fairly quick, and definitely an easy pattern! Chunky yarns still have my heart.

At times, I love working blankets with a variety of stitches and colors to keep things spicy! Today’s blanket however, has gorgeous color that makes it fun, but the stitch is simple and meditative.

This stitch pattern also creates a timeless, thermal texture that’s modern with clean lines. I love this fabric for an everyday blanket, and also for men and boys. But look at all the Scarfie colors you can choose from. I think there are some lovely feminine options too.

And because it’s made with big skeins of Scarfie, the small blanket only takes four skeins!

Love the understated striping with this colorway! It was hard to tell with looking at the skein alone just how the color would turn out.

Materials:

4 (8) Lion Brand Yarn Scarfie in Denim (chunky weight #5 yarn) Kit available here

150 g and 312 yards in each skein

Pattern uses approximately 550 (1100) grams

US Size J 6.0 mm crochet hook

Scissors

Tapestry needle to weave in ends

Size (approximate):

Two sizes available with instructions for the smaller size listed first, and the larger size listed in the ( ) throughout the pattern

Small Blanket (S): 32” X 43” (pictured)

Large Throw Blanket (L): 64” X 43” NOTE: Stripes will turn out thinner than pictured on the large size.

Follow directions throughout pattern for the size you are making. The smaller size is listed first, followed by the larger size. S (L)

Gauge:

Approximately 15 stitches and 12 rows in 4” X 4”

Pattern Notes:

Consider practicing the stitch on a small swatch before beginning the full blanket to make sure you understand the pattern. It’s also a great way to check your gauge so that the size will turn out as planned! The nature of the stitch may cause a slight curling of the edges of the blanket. This can be corrected with a light steam block to finish as well as the optional border. The blanket may also be single crocheted in it’s entirety if you’d rather simplify it even more!

Adjusting Size:

You can easily adjust the size of the blanket by starting with a longer or shorter chain and crocheting for more or fewer rows. Your beginning chain may use any stitch multiple. Keep yarn needs in mind if you adjust the size of the blanket. The chain edge is the width listed for each size , a finished measurement of 32” for the small and 64” for the large.

The Trapper Throw Blanket Crochet Pattern

There are no color changes with this pattern. Simply work through each skein of yarn, starting a new skein at the beginning of a row.

Chain 120 (240)

Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch st from hook, sc across. 119 (239)

Row 2 Ch 1, turn, sc flo in each st across.

Row 3 Ch 1, turn, sc blo in each st across.

Repeat rows 2 – 3 until your blanket reaches approximately 43” or it’s as long as you’d like.

Note that both the large and small size have the same length. The difference in size is the width. (S 32”x43” and L 64”x43”)

Block to shape and size with a light steam block as needed if there is a slight curl on the edges.

Add the optional border if desired. Simply single crochet evenly around the blanket, working 3 stitches into each corner for as many rounds as you’d like.

Tie off and weave in ends.
