The song “America The Beautiful” was written atop Pikes Peak in 1893, and it’s not hard to see why in this wonderous location. In the photo that I took below, you can also see why she may have said “purple mountain majesty”. Without snow, it also looks purple!

Growing up at the foot of Pikes Peak, and loving art since I was tiny, I’ve been drawing and coloring the mountain all my life. It’s always been some shade of blue in my drawings. Still, looking out at it today, I see it as blue and white (with snow).

Have any of you been to Pikes Peak? You can hike, drive, or take the cog railway to the top. We do it whenever our family visits from Europe!
This blanket checks a lot of boxes that need checking! It’s beautiful for men or women, the fabric is nice and tight (it’s not a holey blanket), and it’s SO EASY!
One my my favorite stitches is the Houndstooth Stitch (used here as well), and this blanket puts that to use. You will simply alternate single crochet, and double crochet stitches across.
It truly is beginner friendly, yet the color changing yarn makes it look harder than it is. Many of you have made the Mountain Throw, or my other patterns made with the color changing yarn, but I’d say this is the easiest yet.

While most houndstooth patterns call for two colors of yarn, as well as the need for color changes each row, this one does not. You literally just work through each skein of yarn.
By using the lovely color changing yarn, you get some of that great stitch definition from the Houndstooth, without the trouble of carrying yarn and changing colors.
Okay, let’s get to this super easy pattern!

A mid-weight blanket with a solid, non-holey, soft feel. Choose your colorway and have fun!

Pattern Notes:
The pattern is worked using simple single crochet and double crochet stitches. The blanket uses the Houndstooth Stitch, which usually requires two colors. However, by using the color changing yarn, you’ll simply work through each skein while following the stitch pattern.
To help you stay on track, you can remember that each row begins with a single crochet, and ends with a double crochet.
Adjusting Size:
You can easily adjust the size of the blanket by starting with a longer or shorter chain and crocheting for more or fewer rows. Your beginning chain must be an odd number of stitches. Keep yarn needs in mind if you adjust the size of the blanket.
Enjoy!
Abbreviations/Skills:
