Easy, Chunky Rustic Crochet Cowl

Chunky Easy Crochet Cowl 2
This giant boulder and Aspen Tree grove is right out my parents back door in the mountains. Aren’t they lucky? 🙂

I guess I wasn’t kidding in my last post when I said it’s time I act like an adult and start working on my Christmas gifts before December 1st.  I have surprised even myself, and decided to work on something that could be a Christmas gift here in the month of July.

Chunky Beginner Crochet Cowl with Tie

I’m loving the big, bulky knit blankets, scarves and BIG and thick yarny projects that are out right now.  I had two skeins of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in this Grey Marble, and thought it could make a nice, thick and super warm cowl.  This cowl is so easy, as it’s all done in single crochet – yep! It’s all single crocheted in the back loop, using a “Big Giant Mama” hook,  better known as a size S hook, and holding two strands of super bulky yarn together.  The rib you get from crocheting in the back loop is HUGE from using the big yarn and “Big Giant Mama”.  If you like big, rustic, warm and cozy like me, get out your “Big Mama” and let’s get started! This works up super fast, which is always a big bonus for me.

You will need:

Big Giant Mama Hook AKA Size S Crochet Hook

Two Skeins of Super Bulky Yarn – I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Marble Grey

Small piece of suede or leather to create tassels

Scissors ( Make sure they are good enough to cut leather. I used my fabric scissors)

Tapestry Needle to weave in ends

Notes:

* You are making a rectangle, which you will fold and seam at the end.

Pattern:

With your Size S hook, and holding two strands of super bulky yarn together, chain 30, turn

Row 1 In second chain from hook, single crochet across row, chain one, turn

Here’s what your chain will start to look like

Row 2 until End – Single crochet in the back loop only across row. Chain one and turn at end of row.  Continue this pattern until your skeins run out, or the cowl is as tall as you like it.

This is crocheting in the back loop. See how my hook goes into the back loop rather than under both loops?

Tie off, weave in ends.

Chunky Crochet cowl

Assembly:

Fold cowl, and line up ends.

Using your tapestry needle and a length of yarn, whip stitch from the bottom up, leaving an opening at the top of about 3 inches. Tie off and weave in ends, leaving the three inches at the top open.  You will now work on the leather pieces which will be tied in this location.

Cut two lengths of leather or suede about 7 inches long (or as long as you’d like), 3/4 of an inch wide.  Cut a slit at the end of each piece.  Pull leather through the cowl, and feed the end through the slit. Pull tightly. Cut small tassels as wanted on the leather piece.

Here’s my little length of suede with a slit in the top to attach it to the cowl.

Two leather ties at the top

Repeat this on the other side in order to have two leather ties / tassels.

This, hands down, has to be the warmest cowl I’ve made in my life.

Not sure who this gift will be going to yet, but hopefully someone will enjoy it this coming winter.

Do you like the chunky look, or do you prefer the more delicate look on knit and crochet items? I’d love to hear what you think!

  1. Love your design–the leather tassels are genius! I love massive, bulky cowls and scarves and used to make those exclusively. Some folks told me they couldn’t wear scarves that large and did I make any that weren’t so big. I make a mix now, but my first love are projects with huge, bulky, squishy stitches.

    1. Hi Susan,
So glad that you like the tassels! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the “bulky” look. That’s interesting to me that people requested that you make smaller pieces. I have an appreciation for both looks maybe. I guess it is definitely a personal taste thing – I’m with you though, I love a big, squishy stitch.

  2. I love the “bulky” look as well. I like the look and feel of thick yarn, gives the feeling of a big hug. The leather tassels are a perfect touch. Now I must act like a grown up and start my Christmas projects. Thank you for all your wonderful creations.

    1. Hi Pam, Thanks for commenting. I like how you say thick yarn is like a big hug. That’s the perfect description! It’s so warm, cozy and comforting. So you need to act like a grown up too? Glad I’m not the only one. You’re welcome for the projects, it is fun for me to share them!

  3. Wow! Size S?? I’ve never heard of that size! The largest size I have is Q and I had a dickens of a time finding that! lol! This is such a cool cowl! I think the suede/leather is truly what makes it! Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick has to be one of my favorites to crochet cowls/scarves with. Works up quickly and is super warm! I have to keep my eyes peeled for that Mama hook! I’d love to make this. Although I’ve been crocheting (intermittently) for yearrrrrrs, I’ve never been good a judging gauge if changing up hook sizes for a pattern. I could play with this using my P hook I suppose. See where it takes me! Thanks for sharing your creativity!

    1. You are so welcome! Ha ha! I know, it is a HUGE MAMA hook. 🙂 Thanks so much for your sweet words about the cowl. I am totally with you on the Lion Brand Thick N Quick….it is so cozy and easy to work with! Yes, keep your eyes out for the big mama hook. You definitely should try it out with your P hook. I am sure you can get a very similar look. 🙂 I hope it goes well! If you are in the states, I found my “S” hook at Joann Fabrics. Thanks again for your kind words, Tammy!

  4. Thanks for the response! I’m actually heading to my closest Michael’s today after work to pick up the yarn AND the S hook, which they have (pretty cheap too). So wish me luck! I hope they have a little “swatch” of leather/suede as well, so I can pick that up! Thanks again!

    1. Oh good! Good luck! I got my leather from Hobby Lobby, but I would think Michaels would carry some leather pieces for simple leather work?! Hope so!

  5. I LOVE TO CROCHET BUT I DON’T DO AS MUCH AS I USE TO. I HAVE FIBROMYALGIA AND IT MAKES USING MY FINGERS HURT REAL BAD, BUT I HAVEN’T GIVEN UP YET. I ONLY DO EASY AND I MEAN EASY OR BEGINNER PROJECTS. I HAVE MADE A FEW AFGANS FOR FAMILY. NOTHING FANCY. YOUR PATTERN FOR THIS COWL SEEMS EASY ENOUGH AND SIMPLE. I WILL TRY TO MAKE ONE BUT I’LL HAVE TO USE A SMALLER YARN. MY FINGERS CAN’T MANAGE ANY BULKY STUFF. BUT I DO WANT TO TRY AND MAKE ONE FOR MY HUSBAND. HE GETS VERY COLD IN THE WINTER AND THIS WILL HELP HIM STAY WARMER. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE ARE ON A VERY TIGHT FIXED BUDGET AND WE HAVE TO BUY VERY WISELY. THANK YOU DARLING FROM THIS 68 YEAR OLD WOMAN.

    1. Hi Judy,
Sorry for the delay, but I am glad that you think you could manage this pattern. I know there are a lot of people that don’t like working with the bulky yarn. We all have our preferences! I hope you can figure it out with the smaller yarn. Thank you for your kind words and for stopping by the blog. I hope you find relief from your fibromyalgia.
