Giant Granny Square Blanket Crochet Pattern

Today’s crochet blanket pattern is literally one big granny square! It’s ultra squishy, chunky, and easy. Read on!
See the full, free pattern below or you may choose to purchase the ad-free, printable version from my Etsy store HERE, or the kit from Lion Brand HERE.
If you’ve never tried crocheting a granny square, you MUST! They are so much fun and so easy to make. It’s incredible to see a square work-up as you just stitch around in a repetitive pattern.
Below you will see a little picture tutorial that will help you along. AND, there are so many granny square video tutorials out there. 😉
I’ve been wanting to share a blanket that’s just one square for a while, but wasn’t totally sure what yarn to use. You will see a lot of chunky yarns here on the blog, so it’s probably not a surprise that I ultimately went with Lion Brand Hue + Me.
You can definitely use this pattern as a simple recipe or inspiration for any big granny square blanket you want to make.
While mine has a color change at each round for a dramatic look, you can certainly just work through each skein of yarn as you go. If you’re not a huge fan of color changes, that is definitely the way to go.
This square features half double crochet stitches, rather than double crochet stitches. This makes the clusters feel a bit chunkier!
You might remember my Nora Granny Square Blanket HERE. The Nora Blanket has the slightly more standard squares with double crochet stitches.
You technically can use that square pattern from the Nora Blanket and may be able to avoid blocking. The half double crochets in today’s pattern make it chunkier and super cool, but it will need a block at the end!
Hope you have fun making this! Remember that you may purchase the ad-free, printable version from Etsy HERE!

Pattern Notes:
You’ll crochet one giant granny square to make this blanket! This square is a fairly typical granny square stitch pattern, however, it uses half double crochet stitches and a chain 1 in the corners whereas most granny squares are made with double crochet stitches and a chain 2 in the corners.
The groups of half double crochet stitches make for chunkier groups of stitches. You can certainly modify this to be a more typical granny square with double crochet stitching if you’re experienced, which may require little to no blocking at the end. Feel free to make this your own! It is worked in rounds and there is no turning.
You can make it smaller or larger by simply crocheting more or fewer rounds. Keep yarn needs in mind if you adjust the size or pattern.
Block to shape and size to finish using your preferred method – best results will be achieved with the steam block method. This can be done with a handheld steamer or iron with steam (do not touch the iron to the blanket!)
See progress photos at the end of the pattern for additional help.
Have fun!
