Cottage Quilt Knit Blanket Pattern

Today’s pattern is the perfect stash buster, and it’s also super trendy as squares continue to be so popular! It’s beginner friendly and super nice to haul around as the squares can fit in your purse.

See the full free pattern below, or you may choose to purchase the ad-free printable pattern HERE, or the kit from Lion Brand Yarn HERE!

I love all the crocheted granny square blankets, like my Nora Granny Square Throw, and I feel like there are fewer knit square patterns out there. You might remember my seamless squares Knit Quilt HERE, which is cool because there’s no seaming, but I wanted to make one that could work as a stash buster. Can you imagine how pretty this could be with even more colors than what I used? I’d love to see what you do with your scrap yarns!

The yarn that I used for my Cottage Quilt is Lion Brand Color Theory – it’s a super soft worsted weight yarn that comes in amazing colors. I chose this yarn because you can literally pick any colors and they will look good together. There are no mistakes!

It’s also one of my favorite acrylics because it is bouncy, soft to the touch, and is suitable for babies to adults. It’s a good one!

Each square is knit with a beginner friendly stitch pattern, either the garter stitch or the seed stitch. They can be knit on straight needles, or if you prefer circulars like me, those work too!

Once you’ve knit all of your squares, you will seam them together. There are several methods of seaming that you can use, but I chose to seam with a crochet hook to get that pretty little braided look.

While I used the flat slip stitch seam (I’ve shared a picture tutorial below), you can also use a mattress stitch, or whip stitch. Totally up to you and what you like most!

Okay, let’s get to this pattern!

Again, you can see the full, free pattern below, or you may choose to purchase the ad-free, printable version from Etsy HERE. Enjoy!

Pattern Notes:
This pattern is made by knitting several squares and seaming them together – much like a quilt! Half of the squares are knit in the garter stitch, and half of the squares are knit with the seed stitch. There are many tutorials online for both of these simple stitches. Feel free to make it your own by using stitches that you like, but be sure the squares are the same size as the pattern indicates. There are many methods that you may choose to use in order to sew your squares together once complete. The seam pictured is a flat slip stitch seam created by using a crochet hook (refer to picture tutorial in pattern).

You may also use a tapestry needle and make a simple whip stitch. The mattress stitch seam is another option. Have a look online and try some options out to decide which you like best! Customizing the size: When customizing the size, keep yarn needs in mind as you will likely need to purchase more than is listed here in the pattern if you are making it larger. To add length and width, you may purchase more colors and add more squares on the sides and bottom of the blanket.
