Knit Flat Fingerless Mittens – Straw Bed Fingerless Gloves

As a beginner knitter, I wanted to find a pattern for fingerless gloves.  There are definitely a lot of patterns out there, but I wanted something fast and that didn’t have to be knit in the round.  Let me knit it straight, will you?! So I ended up creating my own little pattern with a lovely mustard/straw color super bulky yarn.  I used Lion Brand Wool – Ease Thick and Quick in Citron.  It reminds me of straw, so pretty. You have to know how to knit and purl on straight needles, so this isn’t for a first time knit project. However,  it’s easy peasy once you know the two stitches. I am no pro-pattern writer (this is my first!) so I will do my very best to explain how these were knitted. Please let me know if you find any errors, or if I can make this easier to follow in any way.

Straw Bed Fingerless Gloves/Wrist Warmers – Chunky/Bulky

You will need:

1 Skein Super Bulky Yarn-any color

Size 17 Knitting Needles

Tapestry needle to weave in ends and sew up seam

Gauge: Close to 2.5 stitches per inch

Pattern:

Cast on 15 or 16 stitches (15 for the smaller, 16 for the larger wrist, or a looser fit), Leave a long tail to seam the sides

(Note:  I did 15 for my wrists)

Knit 5 rows (Garter Stitch)

*Purl Row 6, Knit Row 7* (Stockinette stitch)

Work in this Stockinette stitch repeating, knit, purl, knit, purl, until you have the length you would like ( I did about 5.5 inches of Stockinette)

Knit Cast off, leaving a tail to seam

Use the tail of yarn and your darning needle to sew the seams together.  If you use the mattress stitch (which is super easy), you will see virtually no seam. Type into google “how to do a mattress stitch” and there are videos and tutorials you can follow as you do it.  Sew up the glove and stop where you would like the thumb to pop through.  Use the other tail on the opposite end of the glove to sew top down, stopping with enough room for your thumb to go through.

Enjoy, and do let me know if I can do anything to improve the pattern!

  1. Hi Jessica,
I’ve been knitting since I was a little girl, and that was long ago. I like to think of myself as experienced, but I’m looking forward to trying these sweet mitts. I like so many of your patterns, I think they show a real natural instinct for what’s going to work, and to be attractive! I’m going to try your crochet beanie next and I can’t wait. Thanks so much for your blog and all your great ideas!

The crochet beanie is a favorite of mine. 🙂 I really appreciate you taking the time to comment and let me know what you think. How lucky that you’ve done this since you were a little girl! You’re welcome for the ideas.
