Favorite Style’n Beanie

Crochet Slouch Beanie Free Pattern Easy 2

This “Favorite Beanie” got it’s name because I think it may be one of my most liked crochet projects to date. The fit, the look, the ease with which it’s made…..all of it….favorite, favorite, favorite. 🙂 My mom thought it was woven. No Mama, a weaver I am not. This is just good old crochet – and easy crochet at that.  🙂

Crochet Easy Slouch Style Hat Pattern

Here’s the back, it’s slightly slouchy, but not crazy. I’m thinking the teens will like this but it’s not so wild that us mamas can still wear it too. 😉

This is made in the round, but there’s no counting rounds. You start with a chain, slip stitch it together and crochet away until the piece is about 9 – 10 inches tall.  It is all done in the moss or granite stitch, which is a great beginner stitch (you should be comfortable though with single crochet and chains).  The “Big Easy Stylish Bag” I made was also done in this stitch.  With this, you are going to work a single crochet, then a chain 1, skipping a chain below, and single crocheting in the next stitch. You repeat this, making a single crochet in each chain. If you’ve never done it, hop over to YouTube and see if you can watch a quick tutorial.  You will see just how easy it is. 🙂

I’ve included a video tutorial on how to do this stitch from Fiber Flux in my post for my “Ski Lodge Hat”.  Click here and find a video on how to complete this moss stitch.

You will need:

Size F Crochet Hook

2 skeins Caron Simply Soft in Grey Heather (It may only be one skein. I made this with two partial skeins)

Scissors

Tapestry Needle

Note: No need to count your rounds with this pattern

Pattern:

Chain 84

Join chain with a slip stitch, Chain 1

Round 1 Single crochet in first stitch, chain one, skip stitch, sc in next stitch, chain 1, sk stitch.  Repeat across

Round 2 – End or until entire piece reaches approximately 9 1/2 inches tall, repeat round 1 (Reminder – your single crochet stitches are being made into the chain stitch below). Tie off. This will be the top of your hat.

Here’s the piece just finished as it’s about 9.5 inches tall.

Tying the Top of Hat

Using your tapestry needle and a length of yarn, weave in and out (straight stitch) around the hat every four stitches. You will then pull this tightly and tie off.  This will cinch up the top of the hat.  Once you pull the yarn tight and tie, make a few extra stiches through the top to secure. Tie off, weave in ends.

DSC_4787
Weave your yarn in and out to then tighten, and cinch up top of hat.
DSC_4788
All cinched up. Now I’m making a few extra stitches to secure the top of the hat.

I made sure to put the original chain at the top of the hat so it didn’t fit too tight.  Actually, it was fine on my head, but to give it more stretch, it may be best to ensure the original chain is the side being cinched.

As I’m writing this my daughter just put the hat on her head and is running around with it.  It’s actually adorable on a toddler too – though a little big.

That’s all there is to this little hat.  I’d love to know what you think of it, and as always, let me know if you have any questions (or if I can improve my pattern in any way)!

    1. Hi Sherry,

I have two knitting projects going on right now that I will be posting, and I will put a hat like this on my list to be done after that….maybe within a couple of months or so. I want to make a knit one since I like this one so much! Thanks for asking.

  1. I just really like this hat. It is so well done, classy and will be great to wear on those cold days ahead. It is a ” Favorite Style’n Beanie!”

  2. Love this simple hat! I have a beautiful yarn that would be lovely in this, but it is a chunky weight yarn. If you could please tell me the diameter of the hat (the measurement “side to side” when flat), I can probably work out how many starting chains and what hook I will need to get the same size. I’ll come back and update my post when I get it sorted! Thanks 🙂

    1. I will measure it this evening and post it by tomorrow. I should have done that anyway, so thanks for asking! Glad you like it.

    2. It is 10 inches across when laying flat. Hope that helps! Would love to see a pic on Facebook when you finish!

        1. Yes, that’s a good point-it can fit a big bun indeed! Happy you like the design. Thanks for letting me know!

  3. I’ve been looking for a simple cool seamless hat such as this to crochet, thanks for sharing. Maybe I am missing something but is the finished piece (before cinching) actually a tube? Would be good if an additional picture showed that.

    1. I’m so happy you like the pattern! Yes, it was a tube before I cinched it. Sorry I left a picture out of the tube, I tried to show what it looked like being cinched up, and since it’s done in the round I figured folks would understand. I will remember to take a shot of the tube for the next hat that I do. Thanks for your feedback! Feel free to share a picture on my facebook page if you make one.

      1. Hi, so i started this, my first project working in a round, i am about 6inches long so far. However, as I was beginning, I’d thought it would be too large at 84 chain start, so i decided to drop the chain 20 stitches and i kept testing the first few rows for fit on my head. So now i think its too tight. Thinking of increasing as i go anothet 3 inches and making that the bottom part gor better fit tgen cinching the original start area to be the top, OR pull it all apartand start over. What do you think?

        1. Hi Lisa – Well, I would probably pull it apart and start over. You could make it bigger as you go, though I don’t know if you will get a similar look. I hope that works out, and let me know if you have any other questions!

  4. I just made this in gray for my 13 yo daughter and she loves it!
She’s just requested two more, one in teal and one in burgundy, along with matching boot cuffs.
Thanks so much for sharing the pattern!

    1. Hi Tami!
Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know! I’m so happy that your daughter loves it. 🙂 It’s fun for me to share the pattern. Feel free to post a picture to my facebook page if you’d like-I’d love to see the other colors, and what a great idea to make boot cuffs as well. Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. True Maria, good point. It’s easy to make it longer if you want to. Thanks for the idea. 🙂

  5. What is your policy for selling items made from your patterns?
My daughter wore her beanie to her piano lesson and her teacher asked if she could buy one from me. So before I charge her for one I want to make sure that it’s okay with you.
    Thanks!

    1. Sure you can sell things you make from my patterns! Thanks so much for asking, Tami! I just ask if you sell online or craft fair etc. that you post where the pattern came from and use your own photos. So happy her piano teacher liked it too! Thanks so much for sharing the picture as well.

      1. I was actually going to ask this as well, but seeing as 4-5 years have passed, are you still alright with people selling items from your patterns?

  6. I love the pattern but I wasn’t sure when reach the end of the round if u slip so itch to complete or just continue .. So I played with the pattern and I’m working it flat then will cinch at the top and seam down the side, I’m making it for my daughter, I’ll let you know how it turned out!

    1. Aw, yes! You just continue in the round, no need to slip stitch or count rounds. The only time you slip stitch is to join the chain in order to start working in the round. If you are trying it flat, I’d love to hear how it works out for you.

      1. It actually came out nice and I wish I could post a pic..my 10 year old loved it.. Now to make one for me!

  7. I’ve been looking into starting the pattern with a traditional “magic ring” and increasing, but it turns out to be tricky to increase in “crochet seed stitch”. A week ago a link to a Crochet Me forum post with instructions worked, but to my frustration I just found it 404’d with a “we don’t have a forum anymore” notice. I’ll have another look around.

    1. That’s too bad! Yes, the idea of increasing with this stitch does sound confusing. I hope you’re able to find another good tutorial. I’d love to know if you do end up making one!

  8. Hi, just found this great pattern. I’ve been looking for simple , seamless beanies to adapt as turbans for chemo hats and this looks ideal. I’ll be using berroco cotton soft and a 4mm hook and probably only 7″ to 8″ long … if successful I’ll attempt to post a photo.( lol ) Thanks.

  9. Thanks, I think it’s going to work well for me…The grandchildren, I will just crochet in their favorite color…you made life alot easier for me..thank you.

    1. I’m so glad! Yes, kids love to wear things in their favorite color for sure. Great idea! Thanks for sharing!

  10. I don’t consider myself a beginner but embarrassingly, I am having trouble with this pattern. I’m hoping you can tell me what I might be doing wrong. After I chain 84 and join together with the slip stitch and I begin the seed stitch around my work becomes twisted ( not sure how else to explain). I didn’t turn after I slip stitched, I just kept crocheting around, not sure if that is my mistake. I started it twice and got the same result both times. Thank you for any advice you can provide. I hope I can make it work it looks super cute!

    1. Sorry for the trouble! I am actually working on a new pattern right now, and having the same issue so let me tell you what I did (well, I will try my best). It took me a few times of looking at the chain, making sure I join and not twist the best I could and then I did the first round, trying not to twist. When you get to the point where you are finishing that first round and it looks twisted, I kind of forced it to work. So while it looked like the stitches were upside down, I kept stitching, after straightening it all out. I am not sure if that makes any sense at all…but it was as if it was twisted but wasn’t?

My only other thought that might make it easier would be to try and single crochet the first round. Lastly, if all else fails, you can crochet it flat, and seam….but of course you’d have a seam. I guess this is one of those patterns where a video would be nice. There was another kind lady who was having the same trouble as you. And then I’ve had several send me pictures of the hat and any trouble making it. I hope you can get it to work Nichole!

      1. Try using a single crochet foundation “chain”. Then it will be very easy to tell which is the top and which is the bottom and avoid twisting, because you will be joining into the top of the first single crochet. The foundation chain is stretchier too, better for a hat brim. When you weave in the starting end, use it to close the tiny gap created by the join. Instructions all over the web but here’s a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X9Luybb7CE

        1. Thank you so much for that idea! I’ve heard of doing this but never tried it. I really appreciate you sharing!

          1. When I have problems like this I chain the requested number of stitches but I don’t join, I add one extra chain (for the row height), turn, and then seed stitch back. The piece will now lay flat (not twisted). Now join with a slip stitch and continue the seed stitch in the round (no chain and turns). There will be a little gap at the beginning but when you are finished with the hat you can just pull the starting length of yarn through and close it right up as part of weaving in. This works with any yarn that likes to twist as you crochet.

  11. Ok, as it was only 42 degrees on the way home from karate tonight, I have decided I need a cool hat! So I broke out some left over Patons Demin-y in the grey denim and I am whipping one up! A friend is trying another pattern for her tween daughter, I think my hat will win over the ever changing picky tween!

    1. Oh, yes! That is going to be GORGEOUS with that yarn! It’s a little thicker than the yarn that I used, which will make it cozy too. Some people have had trouble with the chain twisting when doing the first row. If you do, you may want to see a youtube on doing a crochet foundation chain which someone commented would make it easier to not “twist”. Hope it goes well!

      1. No twist, I was double checking as I slip stitched that all was flat! This is looking great! The demin-y is still considered a 4, so I think I will be ok! So excited to work on a quick project. A little break from this huge blanket. (started the border today on the blanket, it measures 72 inches long before the 4 rounds of border! It will almost be the size of a twin bed when it is done.)

        1. Oh good. That blanket is so big, wow! What a work of art. I wish I could get the motivation to to another blanket.

Hope you love the hat. Make that tween jealous!

          1. Ok, so I have worked my way up to a 6mm hook and I am hoping that my big head will fit in it now. It was a little tight after about 4 inches up. So I switched from a 4mm hook to a 5mm and then to a 6mm. Finger crossed!!!

          2. Oh boy, I hope the 6 mm will work! Sorry it didn’t fit with the original…what a pain. Good call to try it before you made the entire thing. You can add a few chains if you need to, just make sure the total amount of chain is an odd number.

          3. Also, good call on using the bigger hook to give it more stretch. The yarn difference may need that bit of a bigger hook. Hope it works this time!

  12. No one else asked this, so I feel silly. I love this hat and have the first round done. When you get to the end of row one do you join in the beginning or continue on over it? Also, for row 2, do you put your single crochet into the chain from the the previous row or keep in the single crochets for all rows? Thanks!

    1. Good questions Cheryl, and I hope my answers will help. Simply continue WITHOUT slip stitching to join at the end of row one. You will put your single crochet in the chain stitch. So all single crochet stitches go in the chains for the entire hat. Hope that helps!!

  13. Thank you! That did help but one more question. Do you join each row or go just continue around?

  14. Help!!!! I am soo confused! I thought i was doing this right, but after reading the pattern and looking at the pictures, I am lost.

Mainly, I don’t fully understand what stitch is being used here. I looked up “seed stitch” on youtube, but all i see is the one where its a single crochet and a double crochet alternating.
From your explanation, this doesnt seem like the same stitch. I think where I get tied up is when you say sc, ch 1, then skip a stitch, sc, ch 1…..then do you just go on skipping every other one? Or are you going back to the one you skipped?

    Please help!!!!

    1. I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time! Okay, I didn’t watch the whole video, but here’s one to give you the idea of how the stitch is worked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugviUK7EdwE You are crocheting the single crochet stitches, into the chain stitch below. So you are skipping the single crochet stitch below, and single crocheting into the chain stitch. Does that make sense? Hope this helps!

      1. I’m rewriting your patternfor my mom to indicate sc in ch st, not repeat row 1. That was seriously confusing

        1. Hi Lupe,
I’m glad you found a way to write it in order to make more sense for your mom. I explained it in the notes above the pattern, but just added another note in the pattern in case any one else has the same issue.

  15. OMG….THANK YOU! That video made it a bazillion times easier (for the record, I was looking at a totally different video/stitch ) …this stitch is so simple now that I see it!! Yay! I’m so excited to start again! Thankyouthankyouthankyou! Hahahah

  16. I am confused about the sewing part. OK it’s flat ouse needle every 4 stitches would there not still be I side open

    1. Hi Cherrie,

It should have been worked in the round, so you have a tube. You are only “sewing” the top of it closed….more like cinching the top. If you didn’t work in the round, and did it flat, then yes, you’d have to sew up the side as well. 🙂 Hope that helps!

  17. Hi Jessica, I am new to you site and can’t wait to try my hand at some of your beautiful patterns! Love the cowl and the beanie. Does this pattern work for a man’ s beanie as well?

    1. I’m so happy you like my patterns! This COULD work as a men’s beanie, but this one in particular is too small. I’m not sure how many more you should chain to make it for a man. Sorry! You may be able to play around with it and figure it out?

  18. so cute and i bet something my fussy daughter would wear 🙂 however, I have low vision and the smallest hook I use is I, would it still have the woven look? what would the count be with an I? thanks so much!

    1. Hi Cindy,
Sorry, I haven’t gotten to play around with it using an I hook. You definitely could give it a try. You might want to use a slightly larger yarn than the Caron Simply Soft.

      1. thanks for the reply, I will probably play with it anyway, worse case is I have another hat and I’ve learned a new stitch. Nothing new about my daughter not liking it, she’s in her teen’s, she doesn’t like much, lol!

  19. I am confused about what to do at the end of the row . Do I single crochet in the next stitch and then continue on with the seed stitch every row? It’s embarrassing, but I have started the hat several times and the hat seems to get smaller and tighter as I crochet. What am I doing wrong? I really love the pattern and want to learn how to make the hat correctly.

    1. Hmmm, these types of things happen to the best of us! You should be able to keep the pattern (sc, ch, sk chain, sc in chain below) going around and around without it getting smaller. You shouldn’t need to add a sc at the end of a round, but maybe you SHOULD because it sounds as though somehow you are decreasing as you go. Are you making sure to put a single crochet in each chain around? Sorry you are having so much difficulty! It’s hard for me to say what’s going wrong…that’s the difficulty without seeing it in person. 🙂

      1. Thanks! I understand now. I was not putting a single crochet in each chain around; rather I was skipping a stitch. I guess I didn’t really understand the instructions and I am going to start over again. I have been persistent with the pattern because I love the style of the hat. I am still a beginner at crocheting.

  20. So I just finished my 2nd hat. The first was too small with an F hook so I used an H which was perfect. Thank you for this simple pattern. I made mine 12 inches long and it took 3/4 of a skein of Simply Soft. It does take a little longer than other hats I’ve made but a nice looking slouch. Be careful not to twist the beginning chain when joining and you won’t have any trouble. Thx again.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing what worked for you. I’m also glad to know exactly how much yarn you used as well. You’re very welcome. Happy holidays to you, Cindy!

  21. I’m loving this hat!!! We have locks in our house hold so finding hats that will fit our head with the locks is sometimes …… More than a little difficult. Now I can make out hats!!! Oh but you are a life save thanks, getting ready to start my daughters first hat NOW!!!!

    1. Locks are a good thing to have! I’m glad to hear this hat will work for you ladies. Hope you love how it turns out! Feel free to post a picture to my Facebook page or email one to me.

  22. I like this beanie, but I have a big head n alot of hair, I need the instructions for XL.
    THNX IN ADVANCE.

    1. Hi! Sorry, I didn’t make this in various sizes. But if you don’t think that this size will fit, I suggest making a larger initial chain. After a few inches, see how it feels on your head. I hope you can get it worked out!

  23. J’adore ce bonnet ! Dommage je ne comprends pas les explications !
    I dont undestand english

  24. Hi there! This may be a silly question but I want to make sure I’m doing this right, when going around in do you just make the tube up spiralling the stitches going up? I’m very new to crochet and am extremely excited to try this hat out. Thanks for your time and sharing the pattern!

    1. Hi! So, you just keep working the stitches around, not twisting them, and you don “turn” like you do when you are working in rows. This is just done in the round. So, I think when you say “spiral”, you are right in that you are making a tube. Hope this helps!

      1. Oh yes that helps tons! It’s next up on my hook so hoping to start it soon. Thanks for the quick response

  25. Hi. I tried this pattern with worsted yarn (RH Soft) and G hook. I did ch 90. Yet, it turned soooo small. I don’t know why. Should i change the hook and the yarn?

    1. Hi! I’ve never used RH soft, but it may be thicker than the Caron Simply soft which I believe is on the small side of worsted weight. With this pattern I find the smaller yarn makes it more airy and it has a good drape. So a few ideas – first, you could use a larger hook. The other idea would be to make your chain longer. Make the chain long enough so it fits nicely around your head. I do write in US terms so maybe the sizing is different where you are? I’m just trying to think of everything so that this can work for you! I hope one of these ideas helps. Thanks for reaching out for help!

      1. The same thing happened to me. After several tries I realized I wasn’t crocheting the stitch properly. Someone online suggested I follow instructions for the linen stitch and it worked out well. I love the pattern.
        jg

    1. Hi Tina! I love hearing that!! I’m so glad you thought it was simple. Thanks for taking the time to comment!!

  26. I make tight stitches, and 84 was wayyyyy too small for me. I chained 94 to begin and made quite loose stitches, and after on redo, it’s perfect! Thank you!

  27. I am loving this pattern, and it seems simple enough for a beginner like me. So excited to try this! I have 2 questions though, I am planning to make this as a white elephant gift for a family Christmas party, do you have any suggestions for making this more of a “One size fits most” unisex hat? I don’t think it’s too feminine for a man, but I want to be sure it could be useful for whomever gets it. Next, I am using a Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight (4), is that similar enough to the yarn you used, or should I be using a different number of stitches and/or hook size to make it adult sized?

Thank you so much for this pattern!!

    1. Hi! It is a simple hat for sure. It’s definitely not a man’s size, and I’d be careful using a different yarn to be honest. The yarn that I used for this is quite thin for a worsted weight yarn and those that have tried a larger yarn haven’t had the same drape in some cases. If you do make it, and want to make it larger just start with a longer chain. Good luck!!

      1. There are several ways to make this beanie so it will appeal to multiple people. I added several rows in the middle and made it more like an elf cap with a bit of a tail and I’ve had many requests for more. You can also crochet in the back loops only to give the cap more stretch.

  28. Hi! The last comment on this is from 2016 lol so I don’t know if you’re still helping out with this pattern, but i thought I’d ask anyway! I’m a beginner – like an absolute beginner, I started a week ago, and this pattern was very easy for me to pick up! I’m using a bigger yarn and hook because that’s all I have available, but I think it’s going to turn out well anyway! My question is, how do I finish it off without having a slightly uneven edge? My last stitch on a round is always a bit raised over the round below it and I don’t know how to make the edge even. Is that even possible?

    1. I can’t even figure out how to join my chain with a slip stitch! Maybe you can help me out. I’ve made a couple of other beanies, so I’m not sure why I’m struggling with this one.

      Jennifer

  29. I love this and it works up quick. I know a lot of friends who will be receiving these as Christmas gifts this year! haha

  30. I’m fairly new to crochet. Can you tell me if there’s a video of this hat that I’m not seeing here? I’m so confused on how to even join the chain with the slip stich before I get to the Round 1. I’ve made a couple of other beanies prior to attempting this hat and thought I was ready to try a more difficult piece 🙁 Thank you for your input! I really was looking forward to making this hat with the super soft yarn I bought today.
