How To Crochet the Even Moss Stitch

Hi friends! I love finding and trying out new stitches that are simple and pretty.  Today I’d like to share with you how to crochet the gorgeous, Even Moss Stitch featuring MillaMia Sweden yarn.

It’s a super easy stitch pattern that uses slip stitches and half double crochet stitches to create a fairly dense and beautiful texture.  I’m picturing baby blankets, scarves or even washcloths.  In fact, I also used this stitch for a simple crocheted coffee cozy a while back that you can see HERE.  So, scroll down to find the written pattern as well as a picture tutorial.  🙂

Have you noticed how different each stitch pattern can look depending on the hook size and the yarn that you use?  It was a thrill to receive the MillaMia Sweden yarn (see all the colors HERE) in the mail from Love Crochet and be able to use it for this tutorial.  It is straight up LUXURIOUS and makes this stitch as beautiful as it can be.

After checking the yarn label multiple times, I guess I have to believe it really is 100% wool (it is just SO soft I couldn’t believe it)!  If you want a 100% wool, super soft, aran yarn I can’t recommend this enough.  Thanks so much to Love Crochet for allowing me to share this yarn with you today.  They’ve even invited me to be in their “flock” of bloggers so I may have more new yarns to share with you soon.  And OH – I’ve crocheted today’s swatch using a size H crochet hook and the MillaMia Sweden yarn in the color Mist.  🙂

Let’s get started…

Even Moss Stitch Crochet Pattern

Step 1: Make a chain with a multiple of 2

Row 1 Sl st into 2nd st from hook, *hdc into next ch, sl st into next ch; rep from * to end, ch 1, turn

Row 2 Sl st into 2nd st from hook, hdc into next st, *sl st into next st, hdc into next st, rep from * to end making a sl st into turning ch, ch 1, turn

Repeat row 2 until your piece is as large as you’d like.

That’s all there is to this easy little stitch!

I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial and thanks again to Love Crochet for providing the yarn!

What can you imagine making with this stitch? I’d love to hear in the comments below. 🙂

  1. Being a more visual person, would you consider doing a YouTube tutorial for those of us who have a “harder” time with written instructions?

    1. Hi Gina,

I’m totally a visual learner too. I do have a video that shows you the very stitch used. Simply make the chain as long as the pattern calls for and follow the “small mesh” version stitch in this tutorial:

I think you might be able to do it. 🙂

    1. To be honest Linda, I don’t really have a brand that I prefer. I’m a little pickier with knitting needles than hooks. I don’t love plastic hooks because they tend to feel sticky to me and the yarn doesn’t slide easily. I do like Clover needles and the hooks that I have are nice as well. But I often am on a budget and I simply buy the inexpensive metal hooks that work well for me.

  2. I had the same thought. A video tutorial would be great. I love your patterns and intend to make the poncho. I thought that the crocheted moss stitch would make a lovely winter sweater.

    1. Hi!

I’m so glad you like the crocheted moss stitch – it is a great stitch! And thanks for the kind words about my patterns and blog. I appreciate the suggestion for the video tutorial. I do have one for the stitch used in the poncho….
So, you will crochet two rectangles using the stitch that I show in this video (link below – the small mesh version as there are two different meshes shown). You literally just make a chain and follow this stitch pattern for as long as the pattern says.

      I hope this helps!

  3. Jessica,

Are you crocheting a slip stitch in the top of a slip stitch of the previous row, or a slip stitch in the top of a hdc of the previous row?

  4. This pattern was very easy to follow, thank you for the individual pictures! They saved me a lot of time verses watching a video and skipping and rewinding and rewatching…. you get the idea lol! I love your website as well. Overall, thank you (:

  5. This is a wonderful stitch! I’m going to try an ear warmer to start. Then I’ll venture into a larger piece. I think I am really going to enjoy this!! Thanks
